AUGUSTA — The lights were on but the doors were closed Monday at Friendly’s at 48 Western Ave., after corporate officials announced the closure of 23 corporate-owned restaurants in the northeast.

Customers of the Massachusetts-based chain were alerted to the closure by a sign on the door: “We apologize for disappointing you on this visit, but this location is closed for business. We regret that we do not have another Friendly’s restaurant near you, but we hope that you will visit one of our other locations when traveling. We appreciate your patronage over the years and for allowing us to try and make the world friendly, one scoop at a time!”

No one at the restaurant Monday responded to a request for comment; they referred media inquiries to an email at the Friendly’s corporate office.
